Adobe Photoshop CS5

Step 1

Create a circle using the ellipse tool. Orange should not have a smooth spherical shape. So we need to make it irregular. Add anchor points as in the figure and create and make the circle irregular.

Step 2

2. coloring and shading
Hit Ctrl+ Enter, then the shape will turn into selection. Press Ctrl+Shift+d then add feather radius 1. Create a new layer name it orange and fill some color. I used #da8711. This is the base color of the orange.

We need one more layer. Make it clipping mask to the orange layer This one is to shade the Orange. I made shading and lighting in the same layer.

I used a hard brush for the basic shading
Brush opacity 20 and flow 60.

Step 3

Create the texture brush for Orange.
1. I created this brush for creating the texture on the Orange. Download the image from here. http://www.pxleyes.com/picture/36598/4dd3ac07c7c13.html
And open it in Photoshop.
2. Go to edit and define brush preset. Name it orange brush.
3. Select the newly created brush preset. It will be located at the bottom the brush palette

Step 4

Open the brush menu from the windows. Use the following settings for the brush.
and save this brush preset.

Step 5

Use a hard rounded brush and blend the shades together. Set the brush opacity around 10-20. and use the alt key to select the adjacent colors. If it goes too flat. then use the newly created brush and add some strokes. Look at fig 2.
Create a new layer blending mode set to multiply. Select the orange brush. Set the brush opacity around 20-30 then apply it. Hold the alt key and pick the darkest color. Fig 4. If the texture is too small, press ctrl + T, and enlarge it. Experiment with it. Applying texture allover make it look flat. So pick the eraser tool and set opacity to 20 and erase the edges. Keep the texture visible more on the center. Also lower the opacity of the layer. Fig.5

Step 6

Create a new layer and set the blend mode to screen. Use the orange brush with opacity 20-30 and with color white. Apply it at the center of the orange as in the figure.

Step 7

Follow the steps as shown in the figure to make the portion of calyx

Step 8

I have added a simple background to the image. Try using different colors for the background.. always try to match the intensity of the background with the foreground image. Otherwise it will look odd.

Step 9

I hope my tutorial was helpful. suggestions and critiques are always welcome.. thanks for reading...
