Photoshop Tutorial: Make A Glossy Flash Drive Icon From Scratch

In this tutorial we are going to create a Flash Drive image which can be used as an icon or added to your design project.
The program you need is Adobe Photoshop. I used Photoshop CS4 but you can create it with older versions of the program- CS2 for example.

The creation of this image requires mainly Layer Styles work, even the opalescence effect and relief are achieved by means of Blending Options.

Practice tutorial

Step 1

Create a new .psd file- Width: 1600px, Height: 1600px, 72 dpi. To turn the background into a layer so that you can edit it, make double mouse click and rename the layer Gradient.
Take Gradient Tool from the Tool Bar, choose Linear type, foreground to Background gradient and change Foreground color to # 011722 and Background color to # 000209. Draw the gradient from the middle to the edge of the image.

Step 2

Create a new layer, take Rounded Rectangle Tool in Fill Pixels mode and set Radius to 80px. Change Foreground color to # c4e3f5. Draw a rectangle resembling mine given on the screenshot to this step. It is not necessary to rename the layer right now. I have done that for the sake of the tutorial. In the next steps we’ll create new layers from this one, which will be deleted.

Step 3

As the flash drive would look more realistic if we show its plug, let’s separate the rounded rectangle shape.
Use Pen Tool in Paths mode to cut the left part of the rounded rectangle- draw a path with the Pen to make a smooth arc for left shape side, right click, choose Make Selection from the menu and press Ctrl+J to set the left shape apart on a new layer named Left Part.

Hold down Ctrl key and click on Left Part layer’s thumbnail in Layers palette to load a selection. Highlight the original Rounded Rectangle and press Shift + Ctrl +I (Select, Invert) to invert the selection, then press Ctrl + J to separate the right portion of the USB on a new layer named Right Part. Now send the original Rounded Rectangle layer to the Recycle Bin as we won’t use it anymore.
As a result of all these three steps, you should have three layers in your palette- Gradient, Right Part and Left Part.

Step 4

Let’s apply some layer styles, firstly to the right part of the USB flash drive. Double click on the Right Part Layer and check Drop Shadow in Layer Style Window (you can do the same by going to Layer menu and selecting Layer Style then Drop Shadow).
Change the settings for Drop Shadow like this:

Blend Mode: Multiply;
Color: # 9bb7ba;
Opacity: 40 %;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light is checked;
Distance: 4px;
Spread: 0%;
Size: 8px;
Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased is unchecked;
Noise: 1%.

Don’t click OK on the layer style window as we’ll continue to add more styles.

Step 5

Let’s add some volume to the edges of Right Part shape. While still Layer Style window is opened, check Inner Glow and change its settings:

Blend Mode: Soft Light;
Opacity: 60%;
Noise: 1%;
Color: # 142F44;
Technique: Softer;
Source: Edge;
Choke: 0%;
Size: 32px;

Leave the other settings by default and keep opened the Layer Style window as we are going to apply more blending options.

Step 6

We continue to add more layer styles to Right Part layer. Check Bevel and Emboss in Layer Style window and change its settings as follows:

Style: Inner Bevel;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 134%;
Direction: Up;
Size: 59px;
Soften: 16px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light is checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Highlight Color: # e3fdfe;
Highlight Opacity: 57%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Shadow Color: # 000000 (black);
Shadow Opacity: 8%.

Still don’t click OK button on Layer Styles window as we are going to add shades of pastel gradient.

Step 7

Now tick Gradient Overlay and change the settings:

Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 54%;
Gradient: Yellow, Pink, Green (From Pastels Gradients set);
Style: Reflected;
Align with Layer- checked;
Angle: 90 degrees;
Scale: 150%.

Now all necessary Blending Options are applied to the Right Part of the USB. All we are to do is to transfer them to the other part.

Step 8

This is the easiest step in this tutorial. While Right Part layer is still highlighted, right click on it and select Copy Layer Style. Move to Left Part layer, highlight it, right click on it and choose Paste Layer Style.
The body of the USB Flash Drive is ready now. All we have to do now is to add more effects to turn it into a designer’s masterpiece and of course, to add a plug to make it look almost like a real sample.

Step 9

Go back to Right Part layer, right click on it and select Duplicate Layer. Call the duplicated layer Right Part Stripes.
We don’t need the previously applied Blending Options so drag the fx symbol (Indicates Layer Effects) to the Recycle Bin icon at the bottom of Layers Palette. In order to add new layer styles go to Layer, Layer Style, choose Gradient Overlay then change its settings:

Blend Mode: Multiply;
Opacity: 100%;
Gradient: Gray Value Stripes (from Special Effects Gradients set);
Reverse option is checked;
Style: Reflected;
Align with Layer is ticked;
Angle: 90 degrees;
Scale: 112 %.

Now we started to create the relief striped surface of the USB.

Step 10

Highlight Left Part layer, right click on it then select Duplicate Layer. Delete its blending options by dragging the fx symbol to the Recycle Bin icon at the bottom of Layers Palette. We should simply copy and paste the same Gradient Overlay we applied to Right Part Stripes layer. Go to Right Part Stripes layer, right click on it and choose Copy layer style from the fly-out menu. Go to the duplicated layer (Left Part Layer copy), right click on it and select Paste Layer Style. Rename the layer to Left Part Stripes. Change Blend Mode to Soft Light.

Step 11

Click on Left Part layer to highlight it, select Pen Tool in Paths Mode and draw a narrow arched path as shown on the screenshot. Right click on the path, highlight Make Selection and when you see the path turned into a selection, press Ctrl + J to set the shape apart on a new layer. Call this new layer Left Part Decoration and apply the following blending options:

Drop Shadow:

Blend Mode: Multiply;
Color: # 9cb6bc;
Opacity: 40%;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light- checked;
Distance: 4px;
Spread: 0%;
Size: 8px;
Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Noise: 1%;
Layer Knocks Out Drop Shadow: checked

Inner Glow:

Blend Mode: Soft Light
Opacity: 60%;
Noise: 1%;
Color: #162e41;
Technique: Softer;
Source: Edge;
Choke: 0%;
Size: 32px;
Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Range: 50%;
Jitter: 0%.

Bevel and Emboss:

Style: Inner Bevel;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 205%;
Direction: Up;
Size: 79px;
Soften: 16px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light: checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Set Color for Highlight: #e0fdff;
Opacity: 57%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Set Color of Shadow: # 000000;
Opacity: 8%.

Gradient Overlay:

Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 54%;
Gradient: Yellow, Pink, Green (the same gradient from Pastels Gradients set which we applied in Step 7);
Reverse: Checked;
Style: Reflected;
Align with Layer: checked;
Angle: 90 degrees;
Scale: 150%.

Stroke:

Size: 1px;
Position: Inside;
Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 46%;
Fill Type: Color;
Set Color of Stroke : #1a3f23

We are ready with the layer styles for Left Part Decoration Layer. As you see on the screenshot, I have organized in two different groups the layers for the left and right USB part respectively. Left Part Decoration- the layer we created in this step is placed on top of Left Part group. Change Blend Mode of the layer to Linear Burn and reduce Opacity to 43%,

Step 12

Move to Right Part group, highlight Right Part layer and by means of Pen Tool draw a curved path resembling that given on the screenshot to this step. After you have closed the path, right click and choose Make Selection, and press Ctrl+J so that the selected shape to appear on a new layer- call it Right Part Volume. In order to give a volume, we have to paste on it the Layer Styles applied on Left Part Decoration layer. So go back to Left Part group for a while, highlight Left Part Decoration layer, right click on it and select Copy Layer Style. Return to Right Part group, highlight Right Part Volume layer, right click on it and choose Paste Layer Style. Get rid of the Stroke layer style as this shape is only to add volume.

We are going to smarten our USB with more arc shapes in the next steps. To delete Stroke layer style, just select it with left click and drag it to the Recicle bin symbol at the bottom of Layers palette. Set Blend Mode of the layer to Linear Burn and Opacity to 30%.

Step 13

In this step we’ll add more relief to the left part of the USB Flash Drive. Go to Left Part Group, highlight Left Part Stripes layer and use Elliptical Marquee Tool or Pen Tool to select a curved line of its left side. Press Ctrl + J to copy the selection on a new layer, called Left Edge with layer’s Blend Mode: Normal and Opacity reduced to 10%. Move it above Left Part Decoration layer.

Let’s change the Gradient Overlay style of Left Edge layer and apply additional blending options too. These Layer effects will not be visible enough on this shape but as we are going to duplicate it a few more times with different blend modes and opacity, we’ll need for example the gradient overlay changed to radial, stroke added etc.

So right click on Left Edge layer, choose Blending Options and firstly check Drop Shadow. Change its settings as follows:

Blend Mode: Multiply;
Set Color of Shadow: # 9cb6bc;
Opacity: 40%;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light: Checked;
Distance: 4px;
Spread: 0%;
Size: 8px;
Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Noise: 1%;

Don’t close Layer Style window, instead check Inner Glow and change the settings like this:

Blend Mode: Soft Light;
Opacity: 60%;
Noise: 1%;
Color: #162e41;
Technique: Softer;
Source: Edge;
Choke: 0%;
Size: 32px;
Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Range: 50%;
Jitter: 0%.

Now check Bevel and Emboss in Layer Style window and apply these settings:

Style: Inner Bevel;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 134%;
Direction: Up;
Size: 18px;
Soften: 16px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light: checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Highlight Color: # e0fdff;
Opacity: 45%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Shadow Color: # 374364;
Opacity: 51%

Let’s change the Gradient Overlay style. As this shape is taken from Left Parts Stripes layer through Ctrl + J, it has the same layer style. We’ll leave the same type of gradient but with changed settings and this time with radial style.
In Gradient Overlay choose these settings:

Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 685;
Gradient: Gray Value Stripes;
Reverse: checked;
Style: Radial;
Align with Layer: checked;
Angle: 90 degrees;
Scale: 105%.

The last layer style we are to apply on this layer is Stroke:

Size: 2px;
Position: Center;
Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 62%;
Fill Type: Color;
Color: # 1a2025.

Step 14

Move to Right Part group as our purpose now is to give it more decoration. We have to create five curves and to apply to them appropriate layer styles for more relief. I chose Pen Tool to make them.
Create a new layer called Curve 1, placed above Right Part Volume layer. Draw the shape with Pen Tool in Paths Mode and fill it with some color. I used blue but you can choose any other as the layer styles we’ll apply later will give the actual color of the shape.

While Curve 1 layer is selected, go to Layer menu, Layer Style and select Drop Shadow:

Blend Mode: Multiply;
Set Color of Shadow: # 9cb6bc;
Opacity: 40%;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light: Checked;
Distance: 4px;
Spread: 0%;
Size: 8px;
Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Noise: 1%;

Apply also Inner Glow layer style and change the settings like this:

Blend Mode: Soft Light;
Opacity: 60%;
Noise: 1%;
Color: #162e41;
Technique: Softer;
Source: Edge;
Choke: 0%;
Size: 32px;
Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Range: 50%;
Jitter: 0%.

The next layer style to be applied is Bevel and Emboss:

Style: Inner Bevel;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 205%;
Direction: Up;
Size: 79px;
Soften: 16px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light- checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased- unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Set color for Highlight: # e0fdff;
Opacity: 57%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Set color of Shadow: # 000000;
Opacity: 8%

Now check Gradient Overlay in Layer Style box and apply these settings:

Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 54%;
Gradient: Yellow, Pink, Green;
Reverse: checked;
Style: Reflected;
Align with Layer: checked;
Angle 90 degrees;
Scale: 150%

The last layer style we have to apply on this layer is Stroke:

Size: 1px;
Position: Inside;
Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 46%;
Fill Type: Color;
Color: # 1a3f23

Create another four curved shapes like this and name their layers Curve 2; Curve 3; Curve 4 and Curve 5 respectively. Apply the same layer styles given in the previous step.

Step 15

Our task here is to add more relief to the right part edge of the USB Flash Drive. Go to Right Part Stripes layer and use Elliptical Marquee Tool or Pen Tool to select a curved line of its left side. Press Ctrl + J to separate the selected shape on a new layer, called Right Edge Curve 1 with layer’s Blend Mode: Normal and Opacity reduced to 9-10 %. Move this new layer above Curve 5 layer in Right Part group.

We should paste here the same layer effects we applied in Step 14 to Left Edge layer. It is easy, just go to Left Part group, highlight Left Edge layer right click on it and choose Copy Layer Style then go back to the newly created Right Edge Curve 1 layer, right click on it and choose Paste Layer Style.

Create a new layer on top and name it Right Part Glow. Choose # e8f8ff for Foreground color, take Rounded Rectangle Tool of 80px Radius, Fill Pixels mode and draw rounded rectangle shape. Right click the layer, choose Blending Options, tick Inner Glow and change the settings:

Blend Mode: Screen;
Opacity: 100%;
Noise: 0 %;
Set Color of Glow: # 999bff;
Technique: Softer;
Source: Edge;
Choke: 0 %;
Size: 250px;
Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Range: 28%;
Jitter: 0%.

Check also Bevel and Emboss:

Style: Inner Bevel;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 100%;
Direction: Up;
Size: 62px;
Soften: 0px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light is checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Set color for highlight: #b9e1ff;
Opacity: 100%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Set Color of Shadow: # cadefc;
Opacity: 48%.

Name the layer Right Part Glow, don’t change its Blend Mode, only reduce layer’s Opacity to 13% and set Fill to 0 %. Optional: Use Eraser Tool or Polygonal Lasso selection plus Delete key to reshape the glowing rectangle.

Step 16

Duplicate Right Edge Curve layer twice and leave both duplicates above the original layer. Rename them Right Edge Curve 1 and Right Edge Curve 2 respectively. Don’t change their Blend Mode only use Move Tool and Right Arrow key to move each curved shape a few pixels forward.

Don’t forget to add glow to the Left Part too. For the purpose, duplicate Right Part Glow layer and move it on top of Left Part group. Rename the duplicate Left Part Glow. To clean the excess portions of the glow load a selection on Left Part layer (Ctrl plus click on its layer thumbnail) then return to Left Part Glow layer, press Shift + Ctrl + I (Select, Inverse) to invert the selection and press Delete key. Leave Opacity to 13% and Fill to 0 %.

Step 17

Go to Left Edge layer (the one we created in Step 13), right click on it and select Duplicate Layer. Rename the duplicated layer Left Edge 1 and increase its Opacity to 100 %. Go to
Edit, Free Transform and make the shape a few pixels thinner than the original Left Edge Layer- it must look like a transparent stroke of Left Edge Layer 1.
As the USB left edge still looks flat, duplicate Left Edge Layer 1 and change the Blend Mode to Color Burn.
As for the Blending Options of both duplicated layers- leave the same ones applied to Left Edge layer.

Step 18

Now we are going to repeat the previous step on the Right Part of the USB.
Move to Right Part group of layers and select Right Edge Curve 1 layer (the one we created in Step 15). Right click on it and choose Duplicate Layer. Call the duplicate Right Edge 1 and move it between Right Edge Curve 3 and Right Part Glow layer. Don’t change the applied layer styles only return Opacity to 100%. Use also Free Transform to make the shape a few pixels thinner.

Duplicate Right Edge 1 and rename the new layer Right Edge 2. Change its Blend Mode to Color Burn.

Step 19

Now let us create a small eye- the part which is used to hang the USB on our necks or key holders.
Navigate to Right Part layer and use Pen Tool to select a thin arc from the edge. Go to Edit, Free Transform and resize the shape. When you make it small enough, fit it to the right part of the USB. Call the layer Eye and place it above Right Edge 2 layer. If you like to darken Eye layer, duplicate it and change the Blend Mode of Eye Copy layer to Multiply.

Step 20

In this step we’ll make the final touches on the right part of the USB within its group of layers.
At first, highlight and duplicate the following layers: Right Part, Right Part Stripes, Right Edge Curve 1, Right Edge Curve 2, Right Edge Curve 2, Right Edge 1 and Right Part Glow. Merge these duplicates and rename the layer USB Stick Right. Move the new layer above Right Part Glow layer. Change the Blend Mode to Soft Light, click twice on the layer’s thumbnail and select:

Blending Options, Stroke:

Size: 6px;
Position: Inside;
Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 19%;
Fill Type: Color;
Color: # 000000.

Duplicate the USB Stick Right layer, leave it on top of Right Part Group and rename to USB Right Shadow. While the layer is highlighted, click on Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of layers palette. Use Soft Black Brush of 60% Opacity to clean the middle area of USB Right Shadow layer.
If you don’t like applying layer masks I could offer another not less successful method: While the USB Right Shadow Layer is highlighted, except adding Layer Mask, simply load a selection on the layer (Ctrl+click on its thumbnail), go to Select, Modify, Feather, insert 60 pixels for Feather Radius and press Delete.

Change the Blend Mode of USB Right Shadow layer to Multiply and bring Opacity down to 75%.

Now we are done with the work in Right Part group.

Step 21

Go to Left Part Group and highlight all layers then duplicate and merge the copied ones. Rename the new layer USB Stick Left. Change its Blend Mode to Soft Light after that copy and paste the Stroke layer style applied on USB Stick Right layer.

Duplicate USB Stick Left layer and rename the duplicate to USB Left Shadow. The place of this layer is on top of Left Part group. Hold down Ctrl and click with left mouse button on USB Left Shadow layer’s thumbnail to load a selection, them go to Select menu, Modify, Feather, set Feather Radius to 60px, click OK button then press Delete. As a finishing touch change the layer’s blend mode to Multiply and reduce the Opacity to 75%.

We are ready with the Left Part too.

Step 22

In order to add 3D look to the USB, duplicate Left Part layer, call the duplicate Left Part Back and place it below Left Part layer (at the bottom of Left Part group). Disable its layer styles and darken the shape by means of Image, Adjustments, Hue/ Saturation (Ctrl + U)- set Lightness to -75. Take Edit, Transform, Warp and move the front part of the shape forward so that to create effect of opened cover.
Right click on Left Part Back layer, select Blending Options and apply Stroke:

Size: 1px;
Position: Outside;
Opacity: 11%;
Fill Type: Color;
Color: # 000000

Step 23

It’s time to add a plug to the USB Flash Drive so create a new group above Gradient layer and name it Plug.
Create the first layer in Plug group and name it Plug Base. Take Rounded Rectangle Tool in Fill Pixels Mode and Radius 5px and draw a shape like mine that you see on the screenshot.
Fit the plug base to the USB right body part, click twice on its layer thumbnail and when the Layer Style window appears choose Drop Shadow and change its settings:

Blend Mode: Multiply;
Set Color of Shadow: # 9cb6bc;
Opacity: 40%;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light is checked;
Distance: 4px;
Spread: 0%;
Size: 8px;
Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased is unchecked;
Noise: 1%.

The next Layer Style to be applied is Bevel and Emboss:

Style: Inner Bevel;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 83%;
Direction: Up;
Size: 3px;
Soften: 16px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light is checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased - unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Set Color for Highlight: # e0fdff;
Opacity: 45%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Set Color of Shadow: # 374364;
Opacity: 51%.

The third Layer Style to be applied on Plug Base layer is Gradient Overlay:

Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 18%;
Gradient: Gray Value Stripes;
Reverse- checked;
Style: Reflected;
Align with Layer- checked;
Angle: 90 degrees;
Scale: 102%

We have to add one more Layer Style to Plug Base layer- Stroke:

Size: 1px;
Position: Center;
Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 70%;
Fill Type: Color;
Set Color of Stroke: # 020a11.

Step 24

Create a new layer named Plug and place it below Plug Base layer in Plug group. Take again Rounded Rectangle tool of 5px Radius, in Fill Pixels mode. Draw a new rounded rectangle which is smaller than the previous one created in Step 24. Fit it to the image in order to shape the USB plug. Click twice with left mouse button on the Plug layer to call Layer Style window and firstly check Drop Shadow:

Blend Mode: Multiply;
Set Color of Shadow: # 9cb6bc;
Opacity: 40%;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light is checked;
Distance: 4px;
Spread: 0%;
Size: 8px;
Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased is unchecked;
Noise: 1%.

Check also Bevel and Emboss in Layer Style box:

Style: Inner Bevel;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 1%;
Direction: Up;
Size: 0px;
Soften: 8px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light is checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased - unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Set Color for Highlight: # e0fdff;
Opacity: 34%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Set Color of Shadow: # 374364;
Opacity: 67%.

The third Layer Style we are going to apply on Plug layer is Gradient Overlay:

Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 100%;
Gradient: # 000000 (Location 0%) - # d7e8e5 (Location 52%)- # 010101 (Location 100%);
Reverse- checked;
Style: Linear;
Align with Layer- checked;
Angle: 90 degrees;
Scale: 112%

Let’s add also Stroke Layer Style to Plug layer:

Size: 1px;
Position: Center;
Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 70%;
Fill Type: Color;
Set Color of Stroke: # 020a11.

Step 25

Create a new layer above Plug layer and name it Plug Line. Choose Soft Brush of any color and 2px size then holding down Shift draw a straight line and place it in the middle of the Plug to look as it separates it. Bring Fill down to 0% and apply Blending Options,

Bevel and Emboss:

Style: Pillow Emboss;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 1%;
Direction: Down;
Size: 0px;
Soften: 0px;
Angle 120 degrees;
Use Global Light- checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased- unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Color: White;
Opacity: 13%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Color: Black;
Opacity: 34%.

The same way create another two shorter lines. Draw them on different layers named Small Left Line and Small Right Line and don’t forget to reduce the Fill of both layers to 0%. Give them the same Bevel and Emboss layer style with only one exception- change the Size from 0 to 4px.

Step 26

On top of all layers in Plug group create a new layer named Openings. Use Rounded Rectangle tool of 2px Radius and Fill Pixels mode to draw two small black rectangles and place them on the plug. Give them only one Layer Style- Stroke:

Size: 1px;
Position: Center;
Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 37%;
Fill Type: Color;
Set Color of Stroke: # efefef

Step 27

We should add a tiny thin and long rectangle to the Plug Base and give it a relief- this is that thing which clicks when we close the flash drive and prevents its cover of getting loose.

Above Openings layer create a new layer named Black Rectangle and use Rectangle Tool in Fill Pixels mode to draw it. With Move Tool place the small rectangle on the Plug Base. While Black Rectangle layer is highlighted, click twice on it and in Layer Style Window check firstly Drop Shadow then change its settings:

Blend Mode: Multiply;
Set Color of Shadow: # 9cb6bc;
Opacity: 40%;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light: checked;
Distance: 4px;
Spread: 0%;
Size: 8px;
Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Noise: 1%

Now tick Bevel and Emboss in Layer Style box:

Style: Inner Bevel;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 83%;
Direction: Up;
Size: 3px;
Soften: 16px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light is checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased - unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Set Color for Highlight: # e0fdff;
Opacity: 45%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Set Color of Shadow: # 374364;
Opacity: 51%.

The next Layer Style we are to apply on Black Rectangle layer is Gradient Overlay:

Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 100%;
Gradient: Gray Value Stripes;
Reverse- checked;
Style: Reflected;
Align with Layer- checked;
Angle: 90 degrees;
Scale: 102%

Apply also Stroke Layer Style to Black Rectangle layer:

Size: 1px;
Position: Center;
Blend Mode: Normal;
Opacity: 70%;
Fill Type: Color;
Set Color of Stroke: # 020a11.

The USB Flash Drive design is ready now and the only thing left is to add text and logo to make it look realistic.

Step 28

Create a new group named Texts and place it on top of Layers palette. Take Text Tool from the Tool Bar, choose Charlemagne Std Font and Set the Font Size to 4 pt. (simply write 4 in Set the Font Size field and press Enter). Type the text LUCENT (I chose #7adabd for Font Color), right click on the text layer and choose Rasterize Type then place this Lucent layer in Texts group. Set Opacity to 23% and Fill to 0%.
Optional: You can increase the height of Lucent text using Edit, Free Transform.

Go to Layer, Layer Style, select Drop Shadow and change the settings:

Blend Mode: Multiply;
Color: Black;
Opacity: 28%;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light – checked;
Distance: 1px;
Spread: 0%;
Size: 2px;
Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased- unchecked;

Now check Bevel and Emboss layer style:

Style: Inner Bevel;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 100%;
Direction: Up;
Size: 10px;
Soften: 0px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light- checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased- unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Highlight color: # 25bba1;
Opacity: 97%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Shadow Color: Black;
Opacity: 13%.

Create a new layer named Separating Line and place it above Lucent layer in Texts Group. Take Line Tool in Fill Pixels mode, Set the Line Weight to 2px and draw a line of a size a bit longer than the text Lucent. I preferred yellowish color for the line- # f2e79d.
Double click on Separating Line layer and firstly tick Drop Shadow in Layer Style box:

Blend Mode: Multiply;
Color: Black;
Opacity: 27%;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light – checked;
Distance: 1px;
Spread: 0%;
Size: 2px;
Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased- unchecked;

Secondly, check Bevel and Emboss layer style:

Style: Inner Bevel;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 100%;
Direction: Up;
Size: 10px;
Soften: 0px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light- checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased- unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Highlight color: # ece415;
Opacity: 100%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Shadow Color: Black;
Opacity: 32%.

Bring down Fill option of Separating Line layer to 0%.

Step 29

Take again Text Tool and use the same font- Charlemagne Std, this time of 3 pt size and type USB / 8 GB. I used color # 7bafbf. Well if 8 gigabytes don’t satisfy your requirements, type 64 for example. Bring down Opacity of this text layer to 24% then go to Layer, Rasterize, Type. Right click on the layer and choose Blending Options, Drop Shadow:

Blend Mode: Multiply;
Color: Black;
Opacity: 28%;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light – checked;
Distance: 1px;
Spread: 0%;
Size: 2px;
Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased- unchecked;
Noise: 0%

Select also Bevel and Emboss layer style:

Style: Inner Bevel;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 100%;
Direction: Up;
Size: 5px;
Soften: 0px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light- checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased- unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Highlight color: # 9592d9;
Opacity: 58%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Shadow Color: Black;
Opacity: 12%.

Step 30

Highlight the last created three layers- Lucent, Separating Line and USB / 8GB and duplicate them. Disable the layers styles of all three duplicates and merge them. Rename the new layer to Text Merged and place at the bottom of Texts group. Set its Blend Mode to Multiply.

Time for adding Layer Style: choose Bevel and Emboss:

Style: Pillow Emboss;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 100%;
Direction: Down;
Size: 10px;
Soften: 0px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light is checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Highlight Color: # 50ced9;
Opacity: 20%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Shadow Color: Black;
Opacity: 6%.

Step 31

We have to invent a logo of the fictional Lucent Company - the producer of our USB Flash Drive. I chose a very simple one using Custom Shape tool for drawing it.
Grab Custom Shape Tool (Fill Pixels mode) from the Tool Bar and select Diamond Frame custom shape from Shapes Set. Create a new layer called Diamond Frame on top of Texts group and draw a tiny diamond frame using color #69a69e. Change Bland Mode to Multiply and reduce Fill to 27%. Double click on the layer and tick Bevel and Emboss Layer Style. Change the settings to:

Style: Pillow Emboss;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 93%;
Direction: Down;
Size: 7px;
Soften: 0px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light: checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Cone-Inverted;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Highlight Color: #0a4142;
Opacity: 60%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Color of Shadow: # 000000 (Black);
Opacity: 10%.

Step 32

Something is still missing on the left part of the USB so let’s add more text.
Select Text Tool and choose again Charlemagne Std font of 4pt size we already used in the upper steps. Choose # 7fb9b5 as a Font Color. Type Flash Drive then click on Create Warped Text icon. You should see the Warp Text box appear on your screen. From Style drop down menu choose Arc and change its Bend to +60%. Don’t change Horizontal and Vertical Distortion. Right click on the text layer and choose Rasterize Layer. Rename the layer to Flash Drive_Arc 1. Select Edit menu, Transform, Rotate and set Angle of Rotation to -90 degrees then click Enter to apply the rotation. Place the text close to the right of Left Part Decoration (shape created in Step 12), change Blend Mode to Overlay and Opacity to 35%. Flash Drive text gets almost invisible but we’ll change its look in the following steps.

Right click on Flash Drive_Arc 1 layer, select Blending Options, Bevel and Emboss:

Style: Pillow Emboss;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 100%;
Direction: Down;
Size: 10px;
Soften: 0px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light: checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Highlight Color: # 50ced9;
Opacity: 10%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Color of Shadow: # 000000 (Black);
Opacity: 6%.

Step 33

Duplicate Flash Drive_Arc 1 and rename the duplicate Flash Drive_Arc 2. Don’t disable its Bevel and Emboss as we’ll use the same layer style with settings changed like this:

Style: Inner Bevel;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 100%;
Direction: Up;
Size: 1px;
Soften: 0px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light: checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Highlight Color: # 268adf;
Opacity: 43%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Color of Shadow: # 000000 (Black);
Opacity: 13%.

Change Blend mode of the layer to Hard Light, Opacity- 100% and reduce Fill to 0%.

Step 34

Duplicate the last created Flash Drive_Arc 2 layer, change Blend Mode to Normal and Fill to 31%. Change also the settings of Bevel and Emboss:

Style: Inner Bevel;
Technique: Smooth;
Depth: 276%;
Direction: Up;
Size: 0px;
Soften: 0px;
Angle: 120 degrees;
Use Global Light: checked;
Altitude: 30 degrees;
Gloss Contour: Linear;
Anti-aliased: unchecked;
Highlight Mode: Screen;
Highlight Color: # 0f2825;
Opacity: 51%;
Shadow Mode: Multiply;
Color of Shadow: # 000000 (Black);
Opacity: 19%.

Step 35

The USB Flash Drive is ready now but if you like, you can add a subtle reflection to it. For the purpose, highlight all Flash Drive layer except the Gradient (background), duplicate and merge them. Call the new layer Reflection and move it below all USB layers and above the Gradient layer, which is our background. Flip it vertically- Edit, Transform, Flip Vertical. After the transformation is applied, use Move Tool to move the Reflection so that its upper side meets the bottom side of the Flash Drive. Add Layer Mask to the Reflection Layer and use either Soft Black Brush of big size (200-300px, Opacity - 20% approximately), or Black to Transparent linear gradient to make the reflection transparent.

Step 36

If you have implemented all these 35 steps and applied all necessary Layer Styles (the most important part of this tutorial), you should end up with the following result:
