Photoshop Tutorial: How to Make a Beautiful Spring Butterfly Scenery
In this tutorial I will show you the steps I have used for making the Butterfly in the spring image.
The main tool we will be using is the soft round brush. All the effect are made by changing the brush size and opacity ,also we will be using lots of layers.
A Graphic table is required to follow create this image.
Let's get started!

Step 1
Open new PSD file
Size: 1500X1640px
Resolution: 100
Color: white
Name: spring
Step 2
Before sketching we are going to create a group folder by clicking on the (create a new group) icon from the layers window.
Step 3
Double click on the groupe1 folder
and change the name to sketch.
Step 4
Now create a new layer in the sketch folder (Layer --> new - layer)
1 - Set the foreground color to # 0202ff
2-Click Brush tool(B), change Size to7px
Hardness 0%,
Opacity 89%,
Flow 92%.
( We will be using the same brush in all steps with different opacity and size).
Step 5
Start sketching the butterfly
drawing steps.
I -start drawing with a small circle for the .
2 –drawing the body .
3- create a new layer(layer-new-layer) for the wing then start with the upper part of the wing,( draw something like a heart shape).
4-sketch the lower part of the wing.
5- duplicate the wing layer (layer-duplicate layer..) .
6- select the duplicate layer then flip the layer with ( edit- transform- flip horizontal) then rotate(edit-transform-rotate) to make the 2nd wing.
Step 6
Sketching the rest of the image.
(Make a simple sketch for the brunch and flowers).
Step 7
Add details to then wing
Draw the details of the wing pattern .
Step 8
Now sketch is done, let’s move to next step
1-Create a new layer above the sketch folder .
2-click Paint bucket tool(G) fill the layer with white color.
3 -make the layer opacity 50%.
4-Change the layer name to white .
(to change the layer name double click on the layer then type the new name).
Step 9
The Butterfly
1-Create a new group folder for the butterfly ( name it butterfly) then make a new layerin it .
2- rename the new layer to black .
3-select Brush Tool (B) size 3px.
4-Zoom in twice (CtrL++) .
5- start drawing the butterfly with black color.
This may take some times, use the EraserTool(E) whenever you need to get nice clean lines.
Step 10
Again draw the first wing then duplicate(layer-duplicate layer..) and flip(edit-transform-flip horizontal , till you get something like the image.
Step 11
Coloring the Background
Fill the Background Layer with # 4b4773 use the Paint bucket tool(G).
Step 12
1-Create a new layer (layer – new- layer) .
2- Select the soft brush(B), size: 1300px , color #e6e4f5 .
3-Click once at the top left side.
4- Merge the layer with the background (layer-Merge down , Ctrl+E).
Step 13
Again create a new layer with the same size brush change color to #100f27.
Brush the bottom right side of the image , merge down the layer (Ctrl+E).
Step 14
1-Now From brush Presets -Brush tip shape choose the dry brush 66 Size: 300px.
2-With the Eyedropper tool(I) pick some color from the background.
Step 15
Add some strokes in a new layer to the same spot where you picked the color from
Change the opacity of the layer to 90% .
Step 16
merge this layer(layer-merge down .. Ctrl+E) with background,
Your background should be like the image below.
Step 17
Coloring the flowers
paint the flowers
-first create a new group folder between the betterfly group and the sketch group (name it pink )
- then create a new layer in this group (name the new layer outlines).
Draw the outlines of the flowers (make sure the brush opacity and flow is 100%).
- Create a new layer below the outlines layer, name it base ,paint the flowers on it ( color #954256).
Adding shades and lights
1-create new layer then create clipping mask (Ctrl+Alt+G) .
2- Now select a darker color then the base , paint the shades with a soft brush 5px size opacity 80%
(For blending the colors use a very low opacity brush 15% and paint between the darker and lighter areas)
Step 18
create a new layer ( name it center ) and paint the center of the flowers.
Step 19
Still inside the same group
1- Create a new layer name it (small flowers).
2- click Brush tool (B ),/strong>Change the brush size to 10px, opacity 98%, flow 98% , color: #d7acc0 .
And draw the small flowers, select darker color for shades .
Step 20
Select the Blur tool (R) .
Brush size: 150 px ,strength:100% and blur the small flowers.
(To create the glowing effect change the brush opacity to 20% size 15px and brush around the small flowers then blur).
Step 21
Adding more flowers
1 -Duplicate pink group and merge down all the layers in the new group (Pink copy) .
(rename the merged layer to more flowers ) .
2 –select the Move tool(V) and move the flowers to a new spot.
Step 22
Resize the layer (edit- transform -scale) and rotate ( edit – transform – rotate).
Step 23
Blur the new flowers with the Blur tool( R).
Step 24
Make more copies of the same layers then hide the sketch group folder( to hide the the folder click on the eye icon).
Step 25
Drawing the white flowers
1-Create a new groupwhite flowers).
2- In a new layer with a brush size:30px
Opacity:58%
Flow: 63%
Color: white # ffffff
Paint the small flowers.
Step 26
Take the Blur tool( R) brush
Size: 150px
Strength:100%
Then blur the new flowers.
Step 27
Make few more copies of the same layer
resize and flip .
Step 28
Still inside the white flowers group
1-Start painting the brunch and leaves the same way we painted the pink flowers .
(First draw the brunch with the color #60401b
100% opacity brush) .
2- Create a new clipping mask layer (paint the shades in the new layers).
For painting the leaves use color #r899e5f .
3-make new copy of the pink flowers change layer mode to screen.
Step 29
Coloring the butterfly wings
Open the butterfly group again makes a new layer under the lines layers
And start coloring the wings with # f26522 color.
Step 30
Adding light colors to the wings
With soft brush size :10px, opacity 60% , color #f2852d.
Step 31
1-Create a new layer(layer-new-layer).
2-Change the brush(B) size to 1px, opacity 45%, flow 35% color black #000000
(draws small lines to create the wing texture).
Step 32
With the same setting brush create the wood texture look on the brunch .
Step 33
Adding the final touches
Let’s go back to the butterfly group
1 – Select the lines layer (the layer with the black color butterfly).
2- Create a new layer (layer- new- layer) then create clipping mask (Ctrl+Alt +G).
3- With the soft brush(B) ,size: 3px, draw the small white spots on the wings.
Step 34
Draw white lines on the butterfly body then soften them with Smudge Tool( R).
Step 35
On the top of all layers in the butterfly group create a new layer(layer-new-layer) change layer mode to color
With the soft brush add some colors to the wings,( add different colors spots.
Step 36
Create a new layer name it Dots, fill it with black color #000000.
Step 37
-Turn the layer mode to color dodge .
-With the soft brush size 3px ,opacity 100% flow 100%, color white # ffffff ,add random spots to the layer.
Step 38
Change color to yellow #ffff00 , add more spots to the layer.
Step 39
1-Create a new layer(layer-new-layer) at the top of all layers, name it yellow .
2- with a Big soft brush (B) ,opacity 50%, colors# f7f733 cover all the layer with yellow color.
Step 40
Change the layer mode to color, opacity to 26%.
Step 41
Create a new layer ,change color to # f3c58a , and paint the layer with big size round brush(B).
Step 42
Change the layer mode to overlay, opacity 65%.
Step 43
This should be your final result .

I'm learning from tutorials for a 2/3 months. I have to admit this very tutorial has motivated me for real art rather than manipulation so much and inspired me to create my own drawing. It taught me so much. I made a poor imitation with mouse thou it says a graphic table is its requirement. Cordial thanks to its author for such a detailed tutorial.
