Photoshop Tutorial: How To Create A Neat Bird House From Scratch

In this tutorial I'm going to explain how I created this neat bird house!
As a source image, I will use the cut tree photo provided by mqtrf.

I'll guide you through this tutorial to create your own "Bird House", just read the steps carefully, and you'll be surprised how easily this can be achieved with Photoshop

Step 1

We'll start by opening an 800 X 800 New Document.
Press D, to reset preset colors.
Foreground: Black.
Background: White.
Leave the layer name: "Background".

Step 2

We'll create our own background.
Click over the foreground color (Black) on your preset colors.
This will open the Color Picker. We'll pick four colors.

1- # 999933 (Start spraying over the black background).
Use a size 300 soft brush, set opacity to 45. Spray with it, three or for times, do not go back to same spot.

2- # 333333 (Do the same as you did for # 1).

3- # 666600 (Do it again).

4- # 996633 (Spray again).

Step 3

This is the image source that pxleyes provided for a contest.
We'll use the image in the making of our "Bird House".

Download the image by clicking on the right side of your mouse.

Save Image As.

Save it in a safe place where you can have access to it.

Step 4

Select the trunk of the tree from image source.

Use the Polygonal Lasso Tool (L).

Copy (C) and Paste (V) the selection.

Name new layer, "Trunk of tree".

Step 5

Make a vertical selection from top to bottom of the trunk of the tree.

Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M).

Copy (C) and Paste (V) the selection.
This will open a new layer. Name layer, "Branch1".

Use the Liquify Tool, (Shift + Ctrl + X).
Use a 125 brush with a brush pressure of 50.
Warp Tool (W).

Make a wavy kind of branch.
Use the Dodge Tool (O) to give the branch some highlights.
Use the Burn Tool (O) to give the branch some shadows.

Use a size 20 hard brush for highlights and shadows.

Copy (C) and Paste (V) the layer "Branch1". This will make a copy of your branch. Make it smaller using the Transform Tool (Ctrl + T). As we'll put the two branches together, make a little cut at the end of small branch.

Step 6

Before we put the branches together, name new layer, "Branch2".

Using the transform Tool ( Ctrl + T ) put the smaller branch on top of the other.

Look for an area with the same texture and colors. As shown in image. In this way the blending will look nice.

Step 7

Working with layers can be confusing. You can make the layer "invisible", or "non-active" by clicking over the eye, to the left of layer, and close it. In this way you'll have more space to work.

Make a shadow underneath the branch. Use a size 35 soft brush with an opacity of 50. Do not name layer, just merge it down to layer, "Branch".

Step 8

We'll start working on the making of our "Bird House".

Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M), make a selection from the trunk of the tree. Copy (C) and Paste (V) two times. Name layers, "Front Side" and "Roof".

We'll use the same selection of the trunk of the tree to make the side of the house and the roof.

Step 9

Open the layer, "Roof".
We'll use the trunk of tree texture.

To make the roof, open Edit - Transform - Distort.

With the layer selected, you'll see the handles around the selection. Pull the side handles to the right and to the left only. Do not pull the middle.

Apply a Layer Style.
Bevel and Emboss.
Depth:100
Size: 5
Angle: -45

The layer name remains, "Roof".

Step 10

For this step, I'll like you to read it carefully. This is very important, as we'll put the little bird house together.

Do not worry to much about layers. They will be some, but not to the point of panic. We'll work with them and we'll merge them down later. Remember that layers have to be in position. Some of them will be below other layers, but others will be on top. That's why, closing the eyes of the layer to make it "invisible" is important. Work with the layers you need, until you complete an object.

Step 11

This step is important also.

Using the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M), make a narrow selection from the trunk of tree. Copy (C) and (Paste) the selection. Name new layer, "Roof Piece". Place this layer below the layer, "Roof".

Give the layers, "Front Side", "Roof Piece", and "Front", a Layer Style, as you did for "Roof".

Copy (C) and Paste (V), layer, "Front Side", name new layer, "Front Back". Place this layer below, "Front Side".

Make an oval selection on layer, "Front". Use backspace or delete to make a little hole. Do the same thing on the roof, but this time, make the hole smaller.

You can see inside the house. It needs a shadow. Use a size 9 hard brush, black color, with opacity of 100.

Step 12

This little bird house needs a bottom.

Copy (C) and Paste (V), layer "Front Side".
Name new layer, "Bottom".

Edit - Transform - Distort.
Do the same thing you did on the roof. With layer selected, pull the handles to the right and to the left.

Use the Transform Tool (Ctrl + T), to lower the shape down.

Make a narrow selection from layer, "Trunk of tree". Copy (C) and Paste (V) selection four times.

Name new layers, "Side1", "Side2", "Side3", "Side4".

Use the Transform Tool (Ctrl + T), to move the narrow selections around the layer, "Bottom". After all pieces are placed together, merge all "Side" layers to the "Bottom" layer. Name new layer, "Bottom".

Step 13

Merge down the layers, "Roof", "Front Side", "Front", "Roof Piece", and "Front Back". This will make a new layer, name layer, "Bird House"

Place the layer "Bottom", under the layer, "Bird House".

You'll have the little bird house almost done!

Step 14

Making the bird feeder.

Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M).
Make a selection from the layer, "Trunk of tree".
Copy (C) and Paste (V) selection. Name new layer, "Feeder".

Using the Elliptical Marquee Tool (M). Make an oval selection on top of bark. Delete the selection. Do the same thing to the bottom of bark, to give a curved shape.

Make another selection with Elliptical Marquee Tool (M).
This selection will be on top of bark, over the area you deleted.

Fill selection with a gradient with a brownish and black color.

Filter - Noise - Add Noise.
Amount: 20

With selection "on" add a white 2 px stroke.

Edit - Stroke

Step 15

Some things just make it look very unrealistic.. such as that branch and it's shadow.
Even worse thou is that the whole bird house is hanging on just a little cord and it doesn't even get unbalanced with a bird on the side..
Maybe it'd look better if it was standing on a tree trunk with some real forest look behind it.
