press ctrl+t and rotate horizontal, then aply layer mask and with a custom brush erase the lower part of the horse using black color.

put the image of the roots above the horse and give a clipping mask. then set the blending to soft light.

put again the roots in another layer and desaturate, use layer mask and different brushes, using black and white color. and different opacities.
