I started out by masking out the sky and doubling up the rocks in the background

Next was a star field, loosely following the star field tutorial.

I joined triangles into a dome shape, painted under them and used dodge and burn to shade it.

Our intrepid explorer was painted.

This...was...so...much...FUN! I borrowed from 2 tutorials to create my planet. Basically, I took a rust texture, put a blue layer under it, then masked the rust layer into continents. I used the magic wand (left click menu, "similar") to change the color of some of it, then used Filter>Distort>Spherize to turn it into a globe.

Here I've added atmoshere, clouds and a shadow.
