I made a gradient for background

Here I have outlined the ice cream. It contains two isolated parts: cone and topping.

In step three I made the pattern for the cone.

I used the line segment tool and made several parallell diagonal lines. Then I copied and flipped them.

I duplicated the cone pattern and gave the duplicates a darker colour. I sent the darker lines backwards to make them look like shadows.

I grouped all the lines and brought the cone to the front of the layer. Then I made a clipping mask to get rid of all the extra lines. I had to duplicate the cone and fill it with the background cone colour again.

I added a lot of shapes and lines to the topping.

I worked even more with it after I took this screen shot.
