first i placed the smoke source on a black ground and inverted it, set the layer style to screen

next i used the action feature with this tutorial..

here i flattened the spiral laters and duplicated it, flipped it horizontally and positioned it

i used this for the beak and colorized it...the rest of the chop was done using the same action with a lot of erasing and colorizing
