So, first I created the displacement maps in photoshop. It's just some random splashing for the lower terrain with PS brushes(hardly visible), and a normal brush for the high... things, with a splash over them. Then I made a few planes, ranging from 100x100 to 600x600 polygons with those displacement maps.

Then I made the backdrop in PS. It's just simple blending of the 2 skies and added planets (Saturn is not supposed to be Saturn, it's just a planet that looks like it. And moon is not the Moon neither. Just in case you say it's not an exo planet bcs of that =P).

Then I added it to the plane in 3DS Max. The texture from the source was optimised in PS to make it seamless and redder. =)

Rendered it, and did small alterations to the image.
