Utah bills itself as the National Park capital of the United States and we happen to agree with them. Utah contains five national parks in all, each in the southern portion of the state chiseled out of, and into, the ancient sandstone laid down hundreds of millions of years ago. Time and the elements have shaped the land with many unique features including some of the largest arches and canyons in the world. This area of Utah can be a landscape photographers paradise but a little planning should be involved before jumping in a car and heading to Southern Utah. Getting there is indeed, half the fun. The national parks are not close to any large airports or metropolitan areas, thus almost requiring either a flight to large city or an adventurous road trip.

Sometimes it’s nice and refreshing to just strip a photo or scene down to it’s absolute bare essentials. The problem is, sometimes when we try to fill up the entire frame with objects, lines, people, shapes, etc, we actually over-complicate things and leave the viewer wanting a place to rest their eyes. The trick/secret is this: Negative space can be just as interesting in a photograph as anything else, if done right.

One of the most common questions that a photographer asks is "How do I photograph waterfalls?" Waterfalls do present themselves as a wonderful and challenging subject matter to photographers. Firstly they're beautiful places, secondly they are often in tricky lighting situation and thirdly they’re a dynamic subject as they’re moving (and of course movement means a challenge but also a real opportunity for a more dynamic shot).

Next time you take your digital camera out and line it up for a shot pause before you press the shutter button and ask yourself: “What is the Focal Point in this Picture?” Some other ways to ask the same question might include – What is the central point of interest? What will draw the eye of the viewers of this picture? What in this image will make it stand out from others? What is my subject?

Digital Cameras present photographers with an ever increasing array of Automatic and Semi Automatic shooting modes. Most of these center around different ways of exposing your shots – however many cameras also give options for different focusing modes (auto, continuous focusing for moving subjects and manual). It’s no wonder then that many photographers never make use of their camera and lens’ ability to focus manually.
