Great tut
Learned something new today, thanks!
Photoshop Tutorial: Professional Make-up and Face Slimming
We will also improve the smoothness of her skin and work on her eyebrows.
This tutorial is made for photoshop CS4.
Thanks to harrykeely for the model's stock.

Author:
Step 1
For a start we must have in mind what are the main appealing characteristics on a male or female. In this case (i'll be working on a female model) elements like the eyes, eyebrows, nose and lips are essential to work on.
As you can see the girl in this stock is a little overweight, her nose is a bit large, her eyebrows have a line format, her smile is a little too opened and she has some irregularities on her skin . So let's start by working on all these anti-appealing factors.

Step 2
We have to pick one element to work at a time, I've chosen the eyes and the eyebrows.
To better transform any of the elements stated before, i advice using the ”Liquidify” tool (filter>liquify).
After going on the liquify tool, use the "zoom tool" or click on Z, maximize the image still you can perfectly see all the details on our currently two focusing points. Around 100%-200% should work fine.

Step 3
Switch to the first tool now, "Foward Warp Tool" (W) and set your brush size to around 30-70, the brush density to 20 and the brush pressure to 30.
The eyebrow looks a little large, so I'll begin by making it thinner. To create this effect use this tool and move it to the directions stated on the picture below. The movements are up-down direction at the top and down-up at the bottom.
At the end of the eyebrow make it a little longer but thinner.

Step 4
Once the eyebrow is thinner, i'll give it a more dynamic format. Using the same tool and sizes create a little curve at the end of the eyebrow and make the whole eyebrow in a soft diagonal format, don't be dramatic.

Step 5
Alright the right eyebrow is done. The left eyebrow is cut, so all you should do using the "Foward Warp Tool" is make it a little thinner and longer at the start , to match the right one.
Compare the old eyebrows and the new ones:

Step 6
It's the eyes turn now. Go to the liquify mode again and let's start editing it. The main goal here is to make the eyes smaller vertically and larger horizontally and to turn them a little bigger overall. Maximize to 66% and once again, using the W tool and a brush size of around 50-100, use a lower one for the eye line on the top.
Note that the line around her eye (on top) has to be decreased, check the image below for more details on the moves.
Once you've done this, use the "Bloat Tool" (B) on the liquify, increase the brush size to around 250 and the and the brush rate to 30, click 2-3 times on the spots below.

Step 7
You can do this to the left eye, all you have to do is to make it a little bigger at the left side.
Now let's focus on her skin, for the black and irregular spots let's remove them with the "Clone Stamp Tool" (S). The brush size will depend on the spot we want to cover.
For the wrinkles i'll use the "Blur Tool" with a strength of 55%.
Check the image below to know the critical areas.

Step 8
Nose's turn - back to the liquify mode.
We want to make it smaller and thinner, maximize to 100% and use the W tool with a brush size around 100-150 for the bottom and 30-70 for the top.
While you modify her nose you'll notice the smile lines will look weird so let's make them smaller as well.
Use the Pucker Tool (S) and use it on some parts (below) with a brush size of 180 and a brush rate of 30.
Look below for more instructions on the moves.

Step 9
Let's work on her face, make it thinner. Use the liquify and the W tool with a large brush size (300-400) and use it around her face.
Once you make her face a little thinner, her head will look too big so you need to make it a little smaller too. The same thing about her chest, cover it more with the blouse.

Step 10
Only one element left, the mouth! The mouth is not so bad so all we have to do is to make it a little smaller. Liquify > W tool, brush size of 100-150.

Step 11
You can do some personal adjust... i did some, made her head a little smaller, her shoulder more inclined.
Now let's start with the adjustments.
Making her teeth more white:
- Create a new layer and paint the teeth zone with a soft white (0% hardness) brush. Then set the layer mode to Soft Light and opacity to 45%.
Her eye balls:
- In a new layer, paint her eye balls with a light yellow (soft brush), then make it's mode to Overlay and opacity to 20%.
Eye make-up:
- In a new layer and a soft brush paint a thin like around the bottom of her eyes. Then go on Filter>Blur>Gaussian blur and add 15%. Then set the layer opacity to 65% and to the Soft Light.
- In a new layer paint her skin on the top of the eyes with a light blue, gaussian blur it (25%) and then set it to Overlay and 100% opacity.

Step 12
More adjustments... curves and a filter (check below).
Then select her face less the eyes, nose and mouth in the quick mask mode, then go to gaussian blur and add 3%.

Step 13
Select the burn tool with an exposure of 25% and shadows mode and add some to the eye balls and the lips, then select the dodge tool in the midtones mode and add some at the white part of the eyes.
This is what we got so far:

Step 14
Now right click on one of the layers and click on "merge visible" then duplicate the layer, go to gaussian blur and add 30%, then set this layer mode to soft light .
With the Eraser Tool at 75% clean the eyes and mouth part and some shadows like the face's line.
Final touches, i added more color and some more blue, color balance and vibrance (check below). Also used the sponge tool (saturate) to give more color to some areas like the lips and the eyes.

Step 15
And here's the final result:

it's a nice work, but I think you've reduced too much the jaw: one thing is making people thinner, another thing is changing the shape of the skull. in the result her face looks too pressed to be real..
if you'd fix this thing your tutorial could be perfect :3
Well most "pro look" ad never show the "before look" in their ad( and I am not talking about those lose weight ad)... So we really don't know what were fixed( well hard core photoshop maniac are different issue) and the image looks great...
Here there is before and after image, so that mars the realistic nature of the image... However I do feel the eyebrow and the eye are not in proportion, even if it is suppose to look threaded...
Well apart from that the tutorial is nice...
quero fazer isso na minha foto
(2 years and 150 days ago)Great tutorial, i learned a bunch of little tricks. Thanks
I think she looked better in the original image. the worked image she looks to "Squashed"
(2 years and 150 days ago)hmmm...
Learned a few tips on how to do some things but...
In step 6 you say "The main goal here is to make the eyes smaller vertically and larger horizontally"
then you make her face slimmer, and now her eyes and mouth look too wide for narrow face.
Think you went a little overboard.
wow mazing tutorial.i love doing this job but u have illustrated this so nicely.thanks a lot.
(2 years and 149 days ago)she looks freaking scary in the after shot, jeez. you went too far, its all about being subtle. if the person in the photo saw what you did she would cry.
(2 years and 149 days ago)you should have stopped at 'step 7', the "after" is meant to look like the "before" but better, not worse
(2 years and 149 days ago)It's all about perspectives... i guess if you get a picture of the same person right now and when he/she had a few more kgs/pounds more it will look similar. Of course it's too hard to predict how exactly someone will look when it's thiner but well you can get close.
(2 years and 148 days ago)I think you ended up aging the poor girl by 20 years. You have some very useful steps for people who are new to retouching, but there is a stopping point.
(2 years and 145 days ago)Hey eyeballs kinda looked blue after. Good tutorial. Overdid the eyes and eyebrow but overall, great tutorial. ^____^
(2 years and 139 days ago)she looked better in the original
(2 years and 138 days ago)you made her ugly and alien-like, way to suck
(2 years and 138 days ago)she looked better in the original
(2 years and 138 days ago)no she looks better in the after result
really!
great tutorial
thnkz!
Better or worse is a subjective decision so we shouldn't concentrate so much on that here. What is definite is the useful techniques that this tutorial presents. Thanks.
(2 years and 130 days ago)It was a great tutorial but I really think you could have made her look a bit prettier.
The tutorial is supposed to be about turning an ugly chick into a hot babe. What you've done is turned a fat chick into a drag queen.
where do we go for making this stuff anyway?? ..
(2 years and 113 days ago)this looks fake n disgusting...
(2 years and 110 days ago)great explaining techniques, I learnt a few things. But she looks fake in the end. touching up her roots and skin a bit would have been enough
Great, now she looks like a hooker. O_o
(2 years and 106 days ago)WOW. You explain well but your work does not match up to your explainations! The whole point of retouching is to fix and make things look better but no one knows WHY it looks better! Subtlety is a hard thing to master and it takes years of practice, so hang in there..........you may be able to grasp it one day.
(2 years and 101 days ago)Nice explanation on this tutorial while some of the points on her face is not appropriate like her eyes and mouth! I still like her original face though!
(2 years and 100 days ago)As one blogger surmised, if no one saw the before picture we would all be ignorant of any change. The resultant post-pic is fine. It's somewhat disproportionate relative to the first and that is to be expected. No human face is perfectly symmetrical anyway and no single aspect or part is flawless relative to another. That is subjective. However, the color and shading is a tad exaggerated. Yet, your demonstration is practical even if it did lack some visual finesse. This picture could be worked on for another hour and still get negativity. Don't sweat it. Good job.
(2 years and 96 days ago)The tutorial was great, I just don't like the finished result. I think that parts of it were good, like how the cheeks were done; but the whole thing with her eyebrows and the addition of such a horrible, cheap looking makeup is what killed it. It took it from a good tutorial on facial slimming to a good tutorial on how to do a before and after "the effects of drugs on your body" shot.
(2 years and 92 days ago)You did a great job
(2 years and 91 days ago)I definitley learned something new and those who mentioned that she looked totally different. Well, at least you taught some folks how to make people slimmer.
(2 years and 91 days ago)Thanks and keep up the great work.
(2 years and 91 days ago)this is great but i think that i will never get this,i am complete beginner i heard for photoshop not long ago. the best mark fom me. super super stvarno
(2 years and 86 days ago)LOL. Some of you are really funny. The point of this tutorial was how to manipulate an image, applying makeup and changing the shape of someone's face. When I look at the after shot by itself, I see nothing wrong. Some of you may be comparing the face to the original and saying that the model looks better before, but that isn't the point of the article. The point is that you wouldn't think twice about it if you only saw the altered photo without knowing that it was changed. The author of this tutorial needs to remove the before image on the last pic because looking at the after result by itself communicates the point that this woman's face is now changed. Having them side by side in the end causes people to do a comparison of the actual model's face - which isn't the point. The woman in the picture is pretty before and after.
Author, this was a good tutorial.
Oh that's right, you did. We need CS4. Got it, thanks.
(2 years and 74 days ago)Good Job. It is Very Intresting... Like it........
omg, she looks like crap!
(2 years and 48 days ago)very excellent tutorial. learned something new today thank you!!!
(2 years and 46 days ago)you tutorial is great...
but...
the eye is not proportion to her face...
how Download?
(2 years and 37 days ago)Nice lesson from photo shop. Thank you very much
(2 years and 1 days ago)Thank you very much friend
(1 year and 344 days ago)it is very knowledgeable tutorial thanks..................
(1 year and 319 days ago)she looked better before, i mean her face shape!
(1 year and 292 days ago)Thank you for sharing your knowledge! now I know how to utilize my photoshop
I took your stock photo, i think i did something good with it check it out.
http://www.pxleyes.com/picture/24039/4bf9e294aae89.html
wow way to make her look completely unnatural. i can do a better job with my feet.
(1 year and 241 days ago)way to be fat AND a liar
(1 year and 227 days ago)Saying the original was "a very fat and boring girl" is what is wrong with this crazy society of ours! So much prejudice (pre-judgement). People are not all about appearances but rather what is inside. You have to learn who someone really is to know if they are "boring" or not, and that takes openness and true listening. It's fine to fix up a photo...and this was a good tutorial, but as for me, I'd take the makeup but keep the shape of the face as it was. the girl is cute, happy-looking, and appealing.
(1 year and 227 days ago)You made her look like a clown, blue eyeshadow and red lips? pfff.
(1 year and 227 days ago)Poor job! Sorry! Tasteless, too! You haven't got the touch or the eye for it!
(1 year and 209 days ago)In modern life, we are concerned not only our health, even our bodies ,Especially fast food as our main food, our bodies began to gain weight, which not only seriously effect our work, but also effect our health. I was an obeser before I troubled deep fat,.when I started to lose weight , I became aware of weight loss is a difficult thing. But since I took the pruduct zi xiu tang, I no longer anxious, now I have successfully reduced by 20 pounds, my friend, if you are still upset about obesity, please try my method, I really hope we do not trouble.
(1 year and 202 days ago)Great tutorial that will get me started. Like what you did with the face, you brought out the inner beauty that should be there, and added a few highlights that aren't the person's natural look but makes her look even better. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
(1 year and 202 days ago)Nice tutorial on how to make someone look like a cartoon. Maybe if you knock all the changes down about 75% it will be better.
(1 year and 192 days ago)She look MUCH better originally. Now she just looks awkward, fake and overdone. She looked cute the way she really was.
(1 year and 191 days ago)The tutorial was helpful, however the end result is a bit overboard in my opinion. Her eyes are not in proportion to the rest of her face, which looks squashed and quite strange, giving her an odd expression - this actually makes her look unnatural/photoshopped which is not typically wanted when retouching a photo. Unlike a couple of other posters, I don't think this has anything to do with comparing it the original either - even when looking at (and showing a few other people) the after picture alone, it was quite obvious that something wasn't quite right. Techniques are helpful though, and many commenters liked the end result so good job and thanks for the tut!
I think this was an amazing tut for a couple of reasons. 1. Tuts are about learning new ways of doing things or just learning how to do things. There are area's that I might change based on an image I choose, but now I KNOW how to do this, to my own tastes. I thought the goal here was to share your knowledge and experience with others so that as a PSD community we all walk away with something. I don't think the point was if she looks cuter before or after, that's a relative opinion. I think the point is did you learn something from the tut? You professional or hardcore ps guys need to ease up a little. Take a step back and breath a bit. Putting something up like this in a public forum I'm sure isn't easy because you do open yourself up to criticism, but really..constructive??? any one here but me hear of that? it's too easy to complain you don't like it, why not offer a suggestion to enhance or change what was suggested?
Just a thought from a 4 year noob
I think it looks 'real' in the after photo. Maybe a liittle overdone, but its a great transformation. All the photoshop skills youve shown us is realllly good it would definitely be of some use!
Thanks alot for sharing xox.
Badly done. She is a lovely girl and your "makeover" looks too fake. It's bad, sorry.
(1 year and 119 days ago)rsherman is exactly right...who cares if you like the particular choices the artist made? this is a TUTORIAL, and if you were paying attention, you now know how to do all those things to your own taste. the WORST thing you could legitimately say about this tutorial is that you already knew everything in it, in which case you shouldn't post at all!
fantastic tutorial, keep up the good work!
on a completely different note, anyone who says she was cuter beforehand is probably also fat and pockmarked. be careful what you reveal about yourself when you criticize someone else's work.
(1 year and 101 days ago)the before picture is much better than the after pic. :S This is not a professional retouching !
(1 year and 37 days ago)i hate my lips and wants them smaller can any one help me edit them ?
(365 days ago)I recently had a makeover and photoshoot, and I'll admit that they did airbrush+slim my face down to get the final results - however, I did still look very much like me! There was no way I could have been made to look a UK size 8!!
The tutorial is a good guide, but I think it should be followed sparingly. The model look horrendous in my opinion. Her skin is sallow and her eyes are alien like. How she could have ever approved such a drastic and terrible alteration to her natural features is beyond me.
I do hope I have not offended you!
Best wishes
the tutorial it s good but ..you don t know how to make up..it s very bad ..sorry
(276 days ago)well all said and done, I think you possess a great potential. keep it up. thanks
(247 days ago)thanks a lot .. i have learned a lot
(237 days ago)can tell me what programs you have made the picture?
(152 days ago)I think this tutorial shows how to NOT retouch a picture, she looks 20 ages older and like a dragqueen in the after pic, absolutely unprofessional. Sorry to say that, i am sure you tried hard but i think ur talent is not in photoretouching
(121 days ago)Great tutorial. However not a very good make-up. Expecting like that: http://alexopoulos7.blogspot.com/2011/11/make-up-yourself.html
(65 days ago)Whether or not I agree with the way you use the term "anti-appealing factors" (because I think she is beautiful without retouching), I'm still going to use these tips to help fix a digital painting I'm working on. I've painted a guy's face, only to realize it's too chubby looking! So I'm going to use that tip of the liquefy tool to slim him down, rather than starting over from scratch.
Thanks!

Great tutorial explaining stuff---I honestly thought the eyebrows and nose were fine like they were. The eyebrows kind of look fake now. Great job though! Still a high mark.
