Using a couple of photos[edit]

Hi! Picture requests[edit]

Would you be able/willing to photograph sites listed on the List of Registered Historic Places in North Carolina? I know it's not well developed, and it doesn't list addresses, but you can find the addresses (sorted by counties) at this website, and the National Register of Historic Places wikiproject I'm sure will be happy to help you use any pictures that you'd be willing to take. Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 00:11, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, thanks, this list is precisely what I need! I definitely prefer subjects that there is already some interest in developing Wikipedia articles for. I also concurrently add places to Wikimapia, plus with all the geocoding I do, the Triangle is starting to show some serious coverage on the GeoCommons layer. I think I already have a few hits on that list, such as Bennett Place. I would definitely like to raise local awareness of all the Wiki projects, and encourage more (quality) contributions. --Specious (talk) 00:39, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looking around at your recent contributions, I was impressed by the bird on the tobacco-free sign. I'm just curious: what use do you think someone could make of this picture? I'm not challenging you, or planning to put it up for deletion as a useless personal photo :-) just curious. Nyttend (talk) 18:56, 30 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I thought of it as two photographs in one. As a bird photograph, it's one with a unique setting. From the point of view of the sign, the bird underlines the freedom from tobacco. I think our culture tends to view birds as being free, as they can fly. Actually, I almost took a better photograph, just when the bird was lifting off to fly away. Unfortunately, I didn't have the correct settings at that moment. My motivation for the photo was primarily to make an interesting sign of a tobacco ban sign, hopefully to be used in discussions of the current trend to ban tobacco around the world. --Specious (talk) 01:39, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You were told twice not to come on the quarry property.[edit]

Please remove the pictures from the site as you were trespassing when you took the pictures. The police have been notified, and a report filed.

It is not illegal to publish photographs taken while tresspassing! For anyone else interested, please see the quarry in question. --Specious (talk) 06:54, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like you will not take no for an answer..............................[edit]

I think that being at a quarry when no one is there can be dangerous. Someone told you that you could not come on the property probally for that reason. You should respect the wishes of all property owners. I don't know if this quarry was shut down at the time of your visit, it looks as if you came in on a weekend? I know a person who works at a quarry who said that all visitors were to report to the offices due to safety reasons, blasting and training. He told me that most quarries will give tours, but you should check in first. You did not follow the rules.

Correction Remarks[edit]

1. curtesy courtesy

2. picture tittle "bundle of gas cylinders/bottles" I would prefer not to read bundle in this case as "bundle" of gas cylinders is normally considered a fixed arrangement of usually 9, 16 or 20 gas cylinders, each with 50 litres (water) volume within a steel frame and connected with looped tubes fom the cylinder valves to a central valve with a single outlet. To be levered by a fork-lift as one piece, safe standing alone on flat ground and to be connected to one inlet of e.g. a gas delivery system of an indutrial plant. best regards johannes muhr, graz (A) ballon.wavez.at physics, chemistry, technics ... 090102 vilnius has become cultural capital together with Linz, where I lived for 20 years.

Use of your wrecking ball photo[edit]

I'm using it on my blog [4] because I am amused that, of all the wrecking balls in the world, the Wikipedia page for "wrecking ball" has an image of a wrecking ball in Durham.

Not a wrecking ball[edit]

Your photo, File:2004-05-07 Wrecking ball.jpg, is not a picture of a wrecking ball. It's a hook and overhaul ball assembly for a crane, and the ball's purpose is to provide the downfall weight that keeps the lifting rope from kinking when there's no load on the hook and the rope is being payed out from the drum. Overhaul balls come in a range of weights from 35 lb to 1,500 lb, not the 1,000-12,000 lb cited for a wrecking ball in the en:Wikipedia article. Accordingly, I've changed the description in the summary, removed the Wrecking balls category and added the Cranes category, and dropped the image from the Wrecking ball article. Duke Hovair system[edit]

Hi Specious. Given how close you were to the Hovair when you took the pictures, I was wondering if you might describe the sound of it? I ask because later (1980s+) sources describe hovertrains as being noisy, but sources from the era suggest they are extremely quiet. So maybe you can offer your opinion? The one at Duke University was very quiet. It's unfortunately been dismantled now. A friend of mine who worked there said it's barely audible. She also recalls they often had to manually remove debris from the track.--Specious (talk) 23:12, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Specious occupying Durham[edit]

Hey Specious, I came across File:2011-10-17_Ildar_Sagdejev_occupies_Durham_at_CCB_Plaza.jpg and I really see the Occupy movement is spreading across the US in leaps and bounds. Can I just ask, who was occupying Durham whilst you were sleeping on the pavement? The more I think about it, perhaps it's not an occupation at all, but rather you have gotten blind drunk the night before, and passed out on the sidewalk, and this is the view from when you woke up? That's not an occupation; it's intoxication. LOL. ;) russavia (talk) 12:00, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The blog will appear in mid-December: http://learnmore.uncg.edu/blog/. One thing potential students don't know is that often the highest quality, least expensive online courses are offered by public universities rather than private or for-profit institutions. Since all sixteen UNC campuses offer online courses, this lovely photo from Chapel Hill seemed like a good illustration. Thanks. Coventry K.

Thanks! They also often overlook that Wikipedia is a totally free university :-D --Specious (talk) 19:47, 1 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

International trucks[edit]

There is a discussion on this page whether images should be categorised as International trucks or International Harvester trucks.   Not many wikipedia contributors have contributed to the discussion or voted with their preference, but you have contributed to material on International Harvester.   I would be grateful, if you have the time, if you would share your own opinion on the page name.  And thank you.
