I did this about 7 years ago, it was for line practice. I never got around to shading or coloring it and to be honest, I never really figured out which would look best on it. The drawing took over a week to do, had to restart a couple of times and lots of erasing along the way. Note: to do this type of drawing, you use a light board and graph paper, you do your drawing on a paper over the graph paper. You do 1/4 of the drawing, then you use that as your visual guide for the rest in reveres or upside down. The original image had no image to follow, it was a basic grid drawing. This style is very good for beginners, it teaches proportion, to replicate images when you are first learning to draw, line practice, pencil control, to pay attention to detail and allowing you to do images of all kinds. Artists of all levels have been known to use this style on occasion, depending on what they are drawing. Hope this is helpful and you enjoy the process :)

While most of this will seem very repetitive, it does teach some very important skills for drawing. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect, something very true in learning to draw.

The flowers in this image were made as doodles originally when I was talking on the phone. I re drew them over and over again, until I got them to where I was satisfied with them. They are in the folk art style, which the design can be simple or as complex as you wish, it just depends on how much detail, shading and coloring you wish to put into each flower. I had recently turned the image into a guide for my son, teaching him how to draw them, the reasoning for the Step by step being so thorough. He is just learning to draw, so I kept the flowers and the lines at beginner level.

This Step by Step is mainly teaching you how to make a guide book for the flowers, each new line is added to a new sheet of paper with the lines you have drawn already. Working on your muscle memory, completing a solid image and proportion. Never trace the existing lines on the previous pages, you will never learn to be able to repeat the drawing free handed if you do and the lesson will fail.

I drew the guide on a tablet of tracing paper and left the pages intact, it teaches you how lines will intersect, how the proportion will be, teaches you the basics and hopefully give you confidence to explore drawing farther on your own.

Note: Once the guide is finished, you will no longer draw on it, the guide will be just for reference only, so once it is finished, it is committed with the black ink for preserving it. You will be able to use it as a guide to draw the flowers free handed from then on. No Tracing allowed!!!!

We start at the last page of the Tracing tablet and work our way forward, while backwards, it teaches us line intersection and to join the lines smoothly. Our first attempt is the cat tail, it is easy to draw and a very good image to learn to make smooth lines and make them flow.

Materials needed: Light board/light box or a sunny window, Graph paper, No 2 pencil - please do not use a sharp point, Art gum eraser, kneadable eraser, Smooth grain paper. Fine tip black ink pen - rolling ball tip, Graph drawing isn't as easy as it may seem, the class I took in it was brutal.The teacher was a perfectionist. Your lines must be a perfect replica in width, smoothness, curve and placement. Our lessons were all geared to teach us how to do this. Graph drawing can be used in many ways, from repeating halves, quarters in drawings to give a mirror effect. It can also be used to help draw a reference image for the first time or to practice. To use it in this manner, you would use two grids.one for you to use as a guide for your drawing and a clear grid to place over your reference image. The squares on both images must be the same size. (Its like the images you see in some puzzle books, were you have one image drawn in a grid and you must duplicate it in the empty grid.) It teaches you line control, smoothness, proportion, mirror imaging and the graph helps keep the drawing symmetrical. The finished product will not be perfect, nor will it be inked. I want you to see how not paying attention to what you are doing can throw off an image. See how many mistakes you can find that I made and please don\'t hesitate to point them out.Its all part of the learning process.

My reasoning behind using computer generated images and hand drawn is that I wanted to join the two different styles, showing how far art has come over the years, the new with the old, the differences, I also wanted to show that some of the old shading styles in drawing can still be used in ps with good effect.
