Dervishes believe in performing their dhikr in the form of a "dance" and musical ceremony known as the Sama, which involves the whirling, from which the order acquired its nickname. The Sama represents a mystical journey of man's spiritual ascent through mind and love to the "Perfect". Turning towards the truth, the follower grows through love, deserts his ego, finds the truth, and arrives at the "Perfect". He then returns from this spiritual journey as a man who has reached maturity and a greater perfection, able to love and to be of service to the whole of creation.

THANK YOU A SQUIGILLION TIMES for your description. Your photo is educational and well caught. I was told that you were not allowed to photograph this spiritual practice. How did you manage this? I like the balance of dancers and then in the background how 'the band' steadies the image visually. Also, the bit of blur (movement) is simply perfect, wouldn't want it any other way. Great upload.

Thanks a squarkillion times for your review. In certain cases the Dervishes accept to be photographed and this was the case. I think it depends on the place where they perform. This photo was taken in a train station showroom.

Sepia has taken us back in time...ahh yes, back to the 40's. It is too bad that the expressions are out of synchronicity as is the body language for it causes the feeling of "dance" and a well-choreographed piece to have a somewhat disjointed feel.
