Thanks very much for clearing this up, Friskiwi. Very interesting... now I'm wondering the reason for this change and who came up with it... I suppose the computer program that computes the scores has been changed accordingly. And also wondering if this kind of scoring is what's in place on another site that someone saw, and is being tried here. Seems like it was complex enough before, and now is even more so....... change isn't always good, and change for the sake of change, well, I guess time will tell.

It was as a result of long discussions and ideas from many different members.
I feel that this way we will reward members who receive a high score but was not in the first 7 places.

which will result in voting inflation - as could already be seen in last week's photography scores. :d

Please explain what you mean by voting inflation.

The average score % is rising. This has happened before though with the last system.
People may be voting higher across the board.

"Vote inflation" means that when you base points on higher scores, people will vote more highly and more people will get points for the entries that wouldn't have gotten them in the past, thereby diluting the importance of rankings etc.

For example - I went to the scores for a week in May. There were a total of 265 entries from the 9 themes with 16 scoring 70% or higher, or 6%.

Last week there were 268 total entries with 21 scoring 70% or higher, or 8% (while that's only a 2 point increase, it represents a 33% increase between the two by comparison).

Plus, for the week in May, there were 2 categories where ZERO entries scored 70% or higher. Last week EVERY theme had entries above 70%.

In May, 2/3rds of the themes had zero, or only one entry with 70% or higher for a score. Last week, NONE of the themes had entries without a 70%, and only 3 had only one entry at that level (or, only 1/3).

It's a little too early to tell if it's actually happening yet as you can't base conclusions on only one week. But it will be interesting to see what happens in coming weeks. I predict we'll see an incremental trend upward.

For this very reason, I have decided to change my voting behavior...

It better be a damn good entry to get a 65% from me... :d

I absolutely agree, James. But, the problem is that if this vote inflation does occur, and you do that, you would end up losing vote power.

Personally, I just haven't been voting at all for the last couple of weeks. I probably won't vote again until I see how this shakes out.

I'm personally not too worried about losing VP...I have a bit to spare my friend ;-)

OK, I see where you are coming from, but I have often felt that the final percent has often been too low. So if it goes up for good entries that is good. Lets just hope that people will also vote a lot lower for BAD entries.
