Hi guys,

Was thinking to have the amount of favorites on an entry count towards the final score.
It would work in a way that if you got a fav from a person with high votepower (or reputation?) would count more than a fav from a new member. This way it cannot be abused.
Thoughts?

You mean favs actually count toward the score of an entry? I always thought they were just to express admiration for an image. :-?

Bad idea IMHO

would make the final score depending on something external (getting as many friends as possible to PXL for that goal) and to complex (which also harms the anonymity), the votingsystem as it is is already almost to complex to explain.

Members may select an entry as a favorite but that doesn't necessarily mean that's the entry they gave their high or highest score. Members choose favorites for personal reasons, maybe it's work by a friend or the subject or technique interests them, another entry may be better done so they might score it higher in appreciation of the workmanship. First place often has the most favs but not always.

In moderating we've seen great comments given an entry but the commenter voted low ( a violation we do act on but aren't always noticed), which is why I agree with wazo, it may be misleading (as with the comments) and be unfair to the author. I think Most Discussed, Most Favs and Most Views should remain inert and not affect the vote scoring at all.

Personally, I rarely mark something as a "fav." I view it as a way to collect (what I consider - and it's only for me) and create an album of the elite shots of the site. I go to the Favs section in my profile when I feel like looking at some really great photography. It sometimes inspires me, usually calms me, and always lets me leave with admiration for many on the site. BUT... for me, it has NOTHING to do with how I vote (although it may have a rough correlation). For me, it's a personal thing.

However, I don't think tying Favs to the score is a good idea. There is HIGH potential to skew the scores. People can already tell friends what their entries are and get them to vote on them (I don't know how often this happens, but I assume some), but now they could get them to mark it as a Fav too? Plus, even without ethical considerations, I just think there are some people who use Favs a whole lot more than others (like I said, I rarely use it). That alone makes me very uncomfortable when thinking about the validity of the voting results.

Sorry Mr.M....I have to agree with the members here... seems like a bad idea. I believe the current voting system is fair enough. I left another site many years ago because it became a popularity contest, not a photo contest....I would hate to see that happen here.

To kinda touch on Mark's concerns...we (the Mod's) do look for voting patters, and when we do find unfair voting (which is very little), we do take those votes out of the equation and warn the members involved...it doesn't happen that often and mostly happen's with new members who don't know better. Usually the system work's just fine as it is.

I don't make a habit of "giving out" Fav's for the most part either...and mostly what I choose to fave has little to do with the technical merit of the entry, like Mark, I chose to Fav things that inspire me or I just 'like'....I don't believe this should be brought into the scoring. Art inspires, that's where my Fav's come into play...

Please keep favours separate from votes. I may favour a photo that I also red flag. Apart from anything else, we have some members who have scored low, but have heaps of favours, go figure.
