I hope I don't insult legitimate people, but if I'm not familiar with them from the site, I figure I can always add them later. I'm not a huge fan of social networking to begin with (which we could discuss the philosophical advantages and disadvantages some other time - but there are WAY more disadvantages), and I don't view this site as a primary mode of one. I do (believe it or not) have friends on my list here. But they are folks I've interacted with and "know" (as much as you can on the internet)... and I haven't had a single problem.
Well, up to now, there was no problem whatsoever in adding active members as friends, much as it amounts to very little, if anything at all since, if you really need to get in touch with somebody, the PM system is more than enough.
Other than that, social networking, generally speaking, sucks, as it creates to people the illusion that they get in touch with other people, more often than not causing problems, and, occasionally, tragedies. It is up to the parents to explain to their kids the huge, the abysmal difference between bloody social networking and socializing, e.g. meeting other people in the flesh.
