Guys help :-(

This is probably smth silly aka button I pressed, but... I've no idea how to get rid of this..

I'm with CS5 - about a week ago smth happened and ever since whenever I need to crop a photo/pic or apply a rectangular selection - the moment I press the button to activate the tool the whole working area goes black!! And stays black until I select another instrument. Frustration is a very mild word for what I am feel towards my PSD right now.. more like - towards myself B-(

This is after "selecting an area to crop"... of course, with no idea what I'm about to crop X_X

Here goes:

I don't know why this is happening, but try trashing your preferences and rebooting. I'm sure you may know this, but the alternative to using the crop tool is to select an area with the marquee tool, then go to Image/Crop. Good luck!

Rebooting - done, marquee tool - same thing happens, but done. I have no idea whatsoever why this started happening - I was doing some minor photo retouching when this happened for the first time and at the time I thought I'd pressed smth. ...but WHAT?! - this does not make any sense, if this really is some sort of a function.. :-S :-(

Stoli4naq, make sure the video card drivers are up to date. Go to Preferences and uncheck Enable OpenGL Drawing. Then restart PS and try cropping. Hope this helps.

Agree with lchappell.

Go to Edit > Preference > Performance and Un-tick (make off) "Enable OpenGl Drawing" option.

REFERENCE http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404898.html

You may experience problems such as artifacts, errors, and crashes, with or without errors if there are incompatibilities between Photoshop and the display components that access the GPU.

If you experience crashes, incorrectly rendered windows or objects, redraw issues, or performance issues while running Photoshop, first determine whether OpenGL is causing the problem.

Turn off OpenGL.
--------------------
1. Choose Edit > Preferences
2. In the Performance panel, deselect Enable OpenGL Drawing. Click OK.
3. Restart Photoshop, and perform the same function.

Did this start after you plugged in your new tablet?

Update:

left my video card alone and went on to switch it off in Photoshop as a normal person would've done in the first place, but I'm a computer genius, so :-b - and it now WORKED!!!

Sorry for being such a dummy and thank you lovely people for help!!! :YMHUG:

p.s. will that affect any other functions? - now that it's disabled?.. :-?
