1. Extrude. The most common . Fast and non-spectacular.

3. Bevel. The best. Perfect control of the final result. Use Level 2 and/or level 3 for beveling both sides of the text shape.

Thanks, I don't think I've ever tried the sweep modifier before.

Btw, do you have any tip on how to make round courners on the text? When using turbosmooth (or similiar), normaly it doesn't work well. I know there is an option on the mental ray materials (makes sharp corners 'look' smooth) but is there any other way?

Dont know a easy tip for round corners.
There are two ways, not very easy.

1. Before you apply an extruder modifier, apply to your text an Edit Spline modifier. Select all corners vertices and chamfer them.

2. Seems more complicate but you can use it not only for text, for all splines.I use this way frequently.
Create your text (spline) in Adobe Illustrator. Its very easy to make round corners in Illustrator. Save it as .AI file. Then import the .AI file in Max. You will have a very pleasant surprise to see your extrudable spline in 3D.
VERY IMPORTANT. When you save from Illustrator save as the older Illustrator version possible. I save as Illustrator 3, not CS. Max dont like CS.

If you dont come through just ask and i shall put here some snapshots.
