50 Crystal Clear Photos by Andrew McGibbon – with Exclusive Interview
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1981, Andrew Mcgibbon is fine art commercial photographer, now based in Durban. With over a decade of experience, he is well equipped for any situation and has a great team around him. His imagery is bright, clean and possibly even happy, all of which lend to his distinctive style and treatment. He is at heart a romantic and values imagination and emotion over rationality when creating. He believes that if you over-plan a photograph or try to achieve an exact image you have in your mind already, you remove the space for magic and mystery.
Today’s showcase on PxlEyes is about him and his amazing artwork. What follows is an exclusive interview with the artist that reveals some things about his personality, talent, gear and hobbies, along with an amazing showcase of 50 crystal clear photos: portraits, fashion, animals, colors, all into an explosive combination of creativity!

Q: Hello Andrew and welcome to our cool community here, on PxlEyes! Please introduce yourself in a few words.
A:
My name is Andrew McGibbon, a commercial fine art photographer living in Durban, South Africa with my wife Luiza. (We don’t have any kids yet)
I am 30 years old and have been making photographs for 10 years. I try to create images that blur the line between commercial and fine art.

Q: You are a professional photographer, as far as we can see. When and how did you discover this talent and passion of yours?
A:
I guess in my last year of school when my art class built a dark room. I changed form a painting major to a photography major.
At least that was the passion part, the talent didn’t come so quickly!
After working for an established photographer for 3 years after school I started shooting on my own and quickly developed my own style that has been growing ever since.

Q: Do you prefer to work in a studio or outside, in the open air? How do you pick your models?
A:
I am very at ohm both in and out of studio. I don’t think I wool deb happy if I only did one or the other.
The studio is calm and realizing with everything under control whereas location shooting is way nor intense and challenging. I like that.

Q: What kind of gear do you use? Does one need expensive stuff to achieve such stunning results, as you manage to?
A:
Unfortunately lighting is very expensive and I can’t achieve what I do without it. I use Profoto lights that I own (I hired lights for many years) and I use canon cameras.
I would use Hasselblad cameras but the price is too high, especially because I live in South Africa and the currency is not strong. I am glad you find my work stunning! 🙂

Q: What other hobbies do you have besides photography?
A:
I like to play my guitar and write music, to spend time in my garden planting new things, I play golf and fish when I can and I love to cook! Anything that relaxes me is good.
Having the heart and mind of an artist can be quite stressful most of the time.

Q: Please share what you consider valuable information to get people started with professional photography.
A:
The best thing I did and what I tell all young people starting out is to assist for an establish photographer.
I feel this is better than going to university as it is how it used to be in the days of the masters.
You would start as the apprentice and then become the master. Universities water down knowledge. To assist is the best way to gain knowledge.
After that I woold encourage them to strive to be unique.
