Nikolaj Arndt ,3D Street Art

Q: Hello Nikolaj. The PxlEyes community gives you a warm welcome. Please introduce yourself.
A: My name is Nikolaj Arndt. I am 36 years old. I was born in Russia and also lived there until 2006. I then moved with his family in Germany. The last five years I have lived in the city of Marburg. By education I am a teacher of drawing and painting. Now I work in advertising as a designer. Also, I continue to paint oil paintings on canvas and chalk on the pavement.

Q: You are a really special artist. Your street art looks very realistic, 3D and creative. When and how did you start doing this?
A: Three years ago I started to draw pictures with chalk on the pavement (I mean, three summers ago). Here in Germany are quite common festivals of drawings on the pavement. I participated in one of them three years ago. Before that, I never drew pictures with chalk. First I went to town Geldern at the international festival of drawings on the pavement as a spectator. I really liked it there and I decided to try to do it himself.

Q: What materials do you use and how long does it take to complete such a work?
A: As for materials, I use chalk and pigment. The pigment is the same as chalk, only in powder. I use water with lots of sugar to dilute the pigment. The sticky base protects the work from the wind. To draw a picture I need an average of two days. The amount of time is restricted by the length of the festival. The festival lasts a day or two. For example, I drew a shark in one day (about eight hours), since in this city, the festival lasted only one day.

Q: Did you ever have any problems with the authorities for painting the street?
A: I had no problems with the authorities because of my pictures on the pavement. I paint mostly at festivals. During festivals, the authorities are doing everything for the convenience of artists. By the pictures on the pavement of every city authorities react differently. In some cities, the picture is fixed with a special varnish to keep the picture as long as possible. To make them as long as possible delighted the audience. And in some cities, on the contrary, after the festival, pictures of washed with brushes and water.

Q: Do you also paint on canvas or digitally? Do you produce any other type of art or just enjoy it?
A: For many years I paint oil paintings on canvas. I paint in various genres: portrait, landscape, still life, fantasy. I like realistic paintings. 3D street art is a new genre for me. I am interested in creating pictures on the pavement.

Q: Please give a little piece of advice for the ones that like what you do and want to give it a go themselves.
A: Those who want to try their hand at street art, I would say: Do not be afraid to experiment. Try something new, it is always interesting. For me the main thing in art is to give positive emotions to the audience. When people are smiling, looking at my pictures, I’m happy.
