73. Love is like a Butterfly

Contest goal:
We all have a song that speaks to us; that perks us up when we’re down or consoles us when we’re sad. Maybe we just like rocking out to it or getting jiggy in the club. In any event, take your favorite song and illustrate it through photography. I’ve seen this used as Photoshop contest in the past and, to be frank, I think we can do better! Any song is acceptable, but try to keep it somewhat mainstream (“Random Indy Band X” may not be recognizable to everyone and, therefore, decrease the impact your photo has on the viewer). Finally, be sure to include the song name, artist’s name, and lyrics in the description (you only need the stanza/line that you are depicting in the photograph). Best of luck!

72. John 3:16

Contest goal:
One of the first rules many photographers are taught is to ‘shoot with the sun behind you’ to ensure a well lit subject. However rules are meant to be broken and this is no exception- shooting a portrait subject (and other subjects too) with some nice back lighting can create some beautiful effects. So the challenge is to shoot a portrait with back lighting (light coming from behind your subject). This doesn’t mean that the only light in your shot needs to be from behind. You need to balance it with other light (natural, reflected or artificial). As a portrait, some of the features of the subject need to be recognizable, they do not need to be lighted as brightly as the back, but some sort of ‘fill-light’ is needed. NO SILHOUETTES!

70. July 4th

Contest goal:
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. We need to work to pay the bills, but we don’t want to work all day, every day. Every now and then we need a break. So, we look forward to, and take vacations! Take a shot of people who look like they are on vacation. You might pick a crowd with one who stands out, or simply an old couple on a cruise. Are they on a metaphoric vacation (sleeping in all day, surfing the internet and eating cold pizza and warm beer)? If it’s not obvious, please give a description why it’s your definition of ‘on vacation’. Animals in the shot are ok, but you must have at least one person. Have fun!

3. Still got the blues.
